Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge
Home Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge This circular challenge starts and finishes from the village of Horton-In-Ribblesdale, which boasts a popular campsite on the Penine Way, a number of small Inns, B&B's and a bunkhouse - as well as the world famous Pen-Y-Ghent Cafe, with it's unique, antique safety timing system for Three Peaks walkers. Most walkers will attempt to complete this challenge within a 12 hour period, and it makes an ideal weekend challenge - staying in Horton before and after your challenge. The walking challenge involves climbing Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough - with no transport between each section. This totals some 24 miles of walking, and around 5,000 feet of climbing. Many people will use this challenge as a training event for the national Three Peaks Challenge of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon within 24 hours. Most of the footpaths on the Yorkshire Challenge are well defined, although some of the moss sections between Pen-Y-Ghent and Nether Lodge are not obvious on the ground - and can be very boggy and confusing in wet weather with low visibility. Although never too far from civilisation, this is still a serious outing into the higher Dales, and you must ensure that you carry the correct walking and safety equipment with you. .
